goldfish

From this past weekend's carnival.

One of the most popular games is the "goldfish game", where kids throw a ping-pong ball over several small bowls filled with water. If the ball lands in a "special bowl", they win a real goldfish that they can take home and keep. Many of the goldfish that get taken home soon die because the kids don't take good care of them - they forget to feed them, they're too rough with them, they don't clean the tank, etc.

When I was a kid, I remember playing the same game... but I always took good care of my goldfish. I can even remember the names I gave the goldfishes I used to own.

Anyways, a strange thought I had while I watched the kids play the goldfish game:

When it comes to relationships, many people treat other people, even their spouses, as poorly as some of those children will treat those goldfish. Maybe they're cruel and callous, or maybe they're just careless... but it still happens, both in small and big ways.

I just hope that I never become one of those people.
