legalistic racism, legalistic idiocy

Anybody remember my post about Joyce Shui, the Chinese American mother fighting for the right to give her daughter a bilingual education against her white ex-husband's lawsuit? She's started a blog detailing her legal struggle called "Stand Up For Sophia".

The latest entry is November 5th, and it doesn't look good. The court has apparently ruled against Shui again, and it looks like her only chance may be an appeal to the state supreme court. I wonder if any organizations like the AAJC have stepped up to help her or not, but damn... Ryan and Mike, hurry up and become lawyers!

I'm a bit sick of the "white is right" legacy of our precedent-reliant legal system that regularly denies Asian Americans and other people of color from the right to enjoy their cultural heritages and language. Bah.

coming together to mourn

Information for those of you who are friends of the Shimabukuro family... an e-mail from a family friend.

Thank you all for your prayers. Carolyn called me today to let me know that she appreciates everyone's prayers and support. She reported that the family has begun to plan the memorial services. If you can, will you please continue to share this with those that you have been e-mailing and keeping others aware of how to support Carolyn, Kristen and John and the rest of the Yabuki and Shimabukuro families at this time.

There will be two services:

The Seattle one is Friday, November 11, 2005 (Veteran's Day) at 1:00 pm, at First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, 1717 Bellevue Way, Bellevue, WA 98004.

There will also be a memorial service in Los Angeles, on Saturday, November 26, 2005, at LA Union Church, 401 E. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013, at 3:00 pm.

The family asks that no flowers be sent to the churches. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to JEMS/PNW, JEMS/AACF - University of Washington, and others to be designated at a later time.

Please continue to allow the family their personal time. If you have questions, in PNW call Felly Bergano at [206.721.3729] or her e-mail, [jemspnw-fb (at) msn.com] or e-mail her, or Jane Cho at her e-mail [JaneCho (at) comcast.net].

In LA, contact Melanie Mar Chow, best through e-mail at [MChowAACF (at) aol.com] or by phone at JEMS during the day [213.613.0022], or leave messages at [626.576.1865].

I don't have to teach at the school on Friday, but I guess I'll be dressing up still.

Gar--Thanks for following up on this story.

It helps remind us what we already knew--the developed, amazing legal system that evokes so much national, patriotic pride is worthless when it's being run by a bunch of crackers.

xian- exactly. a legal system can only begin approximate being fair when the make up of its arbitrators reflect the citizens it judges.

The faster you do my homework, the faster I become a lawyer.
