analogous
Well, I've finally weathered the first part of grad school applications by turning in all the paperwork and taking all the tests. The last test I took was this past Saturday at Schmitz Hall at the UW: the MAT (Miller Analogy Test). It was 120 questions in 60 minutes and as the name suggests... it was all analogies. Remember those? A:B :: C:D, E:F :: G:H sorta things? The relationship can be A:A :: B:B or A:B :: A:B. Yeah, it's not as bad as it sounds, but I'll say this much: the test is pretty culturally biased and knowledge intensive. If you don't know references to literature, art, religion, music, history, etc, you're screwed. Here's some examples I've come up with that are similar to the kinds of questions that were on the test... feel free to post answers in the comments section. And try not to use GOOGLE. ;) .:. 1. CARMEN:BUTTERFLY :: SPAIN:( ? ) 2. ARACHNE:LOT'S WIFE :: ( ? ):SALT 3. BOOTH: ( ? ) :: LINCOLN:HAMILTON 4. KORAN:ALLAH :: TORAH:( ? ) 5. COPERNICUS:HELIOCENTRIC :: ( ? ):GEOCENTRIC 6. AESOP:JESUS :: ( ? ):PARABLES 7. ( ? ):PLATO :: PLATO:ARISTOTLE 8. ( ? ):FRENCH :: ALCOHOL:SABOTAGE .:. As you can see, there were a lot of questions pertaining to European/American and "Classical" history, science, and literature. I didn't have many problems answering them, but imagine being a non-native speaker of English. Even if you could understand the meanings of the words, it'd be difficult to decipher the relationships without knowledge of where they come from. Anyways, I'm glad that's over with. On to other things... |
