history has a funny sense of humor
Senator Strom Thurmond, who died at age 100 in 2003, was famous for being an opponent of the de-segregation movement, an outspoken racist in the '40s and '50s, and the longest serving senator in US history. He also had a secret: A bi-racial, illegitimate daughter by his family's African American maid. The maid was only 16 years old at the time. "I always thought I had a fairly normal childhood, until I found out my parents weren't who I thought they were." Now the daughter, who's 79, has written a book. Check out an article about it here. |
